"Very superstitious, Writing's on the wall, Very superstitious, Ladders bout' to fall, Thirteen month old baby, Broke the lookin' glass Seven years of bad luck, The good things in your past." Who doesn't love Stevie Wonder, who doesn't love his song Superstitions? Heck, I love the song, even have it on my Ipod. This year the song seems strangely appropriate for the 135th Preakness Stakes.
In the Kentucky Derby, Super Saver, drew the number four post, one post outside of where his great grandsire, Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, broke before he won his Kentucky Derby. In the Preakness, Super Saver draws post position number eight. The exact same post as Seattle Slew had before stole away in the Preakness Stakes, setting him one step away from Triple Crown glory.
Lookin at Lucky, who has been anything but lucky in his first three starts in 2010, may just have a change of luck as he takes as second crack as Super Saver. In the Kentucky Derby, Lookin at Lucky drew post number one, arguably the worst in the field. For the Preakness the son of Smart Strike struck gold when drawing the lucky number seven. With a new jockey to shake things up, will Lookin at Lucky finally be able to turn his luck around
Another thing to consider about these two post position is that over the last decade horses like Bernardini, Big Brown, Smarty Jones, and War Emblem have broken from post seven or eight before striding away to victory. Fusaichi Pegasus and Street Sense both ran second after breaking from the seven and eight posts.
Normally, I am not one for hunches or superstitions, but with so many "good omens" in one race, how can one not think that maybe just one of those signs means something? So will Lucky finally hit a break through in the Preakness or will it be Super Saver who follows in his great grandsire's footsteps?
Lookin At Lucky for the win, but I think Super Saver will hit the board in either second or third. They are both good colts but I think Lookin At Lucky is still the best of this years crop, he just hasn't had a chance to prove it other than in the Rebel Stakes. It is very refreshing to see him get a fair post position this time.
ReplyDeleteJackson Bend is my second pick, I still love this little guy and hope he can bounce back from his first off-the-board effort in the Derby with another second place run.
Schoolyard Dreams and Caracortado look like the best long-shots in the field to me. Curious to see how Paddy O'Prado does, his works are always great!
Lookin at Lucky should give the Derby winner all he can handle today, but...I am rooting for a Triple Crown, so c'mon Super Saver!
